ELEPHANT SCALE RECOMMENDATIONS

The AZA Standards for Elephant Care and Management states:

All elephants’ body weight must be assessed and recorded at least twice a year through actual weighing or through the use of standardized body American Zoo and Aquarium Association measurement tables, photographs, or similar, previously validated techniques.

One of the most important aspects of elephant care, as outlined in the AZA Standards for Elephant Care and Management, is performing daily body exams. These daily exams can often include weighing elephants.

Large scales capable of recording weights of more than 5,000 lbs are often hard to find.

Below are several scale recommendations from AZA Institutions:

1. One AZA institution recently purchased a steel platform scale (Pennsylvania Scale model 6600).  It was purchased from a local distributor and allowed the zoo to upgrade it from a 10,000 lb to
a 20,000 lb weight limit.  The scale platform is 4'x4'x4" and weighs about 250 lb. The cost was around $3,200.

2. Another recommendation was to use a GSE-Gator Deck # 198500-04040103, with a 10,000 lb capacity. It is 4'x4' and just a few inches off the ground. It is very accurate and easy to use.
It was purchased from and installed by a local dealer.
