Meet AZA's Elephants
Meet Billy

Billy, a 25 year old Asian elephant, is the first to move in to the new six-acre Elephants of Asia exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. As a form of encouragement and enrichment, Zoo staff used a trail of pumpkins to guide Billy into his new home!
Soon after entering the new habitat, Billy began eating the pumpkins and other greenery. He then splashed around under the exhibit's waterfall and dug into the river sand surrounding the habitat. For zoo staff, seeing Billy excitedly explore his new environment was truly rewarding.

The Elephants of Asia exhibit is scheduled to open in mid-December 2010 and will incorporate features such as bathing pools, sandy hills, varied terrain, enrichment opportunities and a state of the art elephant barn. Educational materials will explore the role elephants play in the cultures of Asian countries such as Thailand, India, China and Cambodia. Visitors will also learn about the challenges facing Asian elephants and will have the opportunity to directly support conservation programs working to conserve and protect Asian elephants in the wild.
